Managing your business taxes and CRA correspondence online is no longer optional — it’s essential. One of the most important tools available to Canadian business owners is the CRA My Business Account.
If you already have a Business Number (BN) but haven’t yet linked it to your CRA online profile, this guide will walk you through the basics and help you avoid common issues along the way.
What Is a CRA My Business Account?
A My Business Account allows business owners to securely manage their CRA obligations online. Once set up, you can:
- File and manage GST/HST, payroll, and corporate tax accounts
- View CRA notices and mail online
- Update business information
- Manage payments, balances, and refunds
- Grant access to accountants or bookkeepers
If you already use CRA My Account for personal taxes, you’re halfway there.
Step 1: Sign In to Your CRA Online Account
You’ll start by logging in using your existing CRA credentials — there is no separate login for business access.
You can sign in using:
- Your CRA user ID and password, or
- A Sign-In Partner (such as your bank)
Once logged in, you’ll land on your CRA Welcome Page.
Step 2: Add Your Business Account
From the Welcome Page:
- Click “Add account”
- Select “Business account”
- Choose “Add Business Number”
- Enter your 9-digit BN only (no program codes like RT0001 or RP0001)
If entered correctly, you should receive confirmation that your business has been linked to your account.
Step 3: Access Your Business Account
After adding your BN:
- Return to the Welcome Page
- Your business should now appear under My Business Account
- Select it to access filing, notices, and account services
From here, you’re fully set up to manage your business CRA activity online.
What If Your Business Doesn’t Appear?
In some cases, the CRA system may not allow you to add your BN if your SIN is not properly linked to the business in their records.
If this happens:
- Log out and try adding the BN again
- If the issue persists, contact CRA Business Enquiries by phone
- Have your SIN, BN, and ownership documentation ready
The CRA can update their records so you can gain access.
Helpful Tips to Know
You only need to link your BN once
Your business will remain accessible in My Business Account going forward
If you don’t see the option to add a business, your CRA account may need full verification before access is granted
